At the heart of this infrastructure are water well pumps, which draw groundwater from deep aquifers and transport it to the surface. Installing these systems is a precise, multi-step mechanical and electrical process that requires specialized equipment, technical expertise, and strict adherence to local environmental and plumbing codes.
Understanding the Types of Water Well Pumps
Before installation begins, technicians select the appropriate pump type based on the well’s depth, static water level, and household water demand:

Submersible Pumps: The most common choice for deep wells (ranging from 25 to over 500 feet). The pump motor is sealed water-tight and submerged completely underwater near the bottom of the well casing, pushing water upward toward the surface.

Step 1: Pre-Installation Inspection and System Sizing
A professional installation begins with a detailed assessment of the well head and electrical service. Technicians measure the well’s total depth, static water level (the distance from ground level to the top of the water), and recovery rate (how fast the well refills).
Proper sizing is critical:

Gallons Per Minute (GPM): The pump must meet peak household demand, typically calculated based on the number of bathrooms and fixtures in the home.

Step 2: Assembling the Submersible Pump and Drop Pipe
The assembly process takes place above ground before lowering equipment into the well casing:

Attaching the Check Valve: A one-way check valve is installed directly onto the pump discharge port (or integrated internally) to prevent pumped water from flowing backward into the well when the motor shuts off, maintaining pressure throughout the plumbing lines.

Connecting the Drop Pipe: The pump is connected to rigid PVC, poly pipe, or stainless steel drop pipe sections. Threaded connections are sealed with NSF-certified thread sealant to prevent high-pressure leaks.

Installing Torque Arrestors and Wire Guides: A rubber torque arrestor is clamped just above the pump to absorb the rotational twist generated when the motor starts. Plastic wire guides are attached every 10 to 20 feet along the drop pipe to protect electrical wires from rubbing against the steel or PVC well casing.

Step 3: Lowering the Assembly Into the Well Casing

Step 4: Connecting Above-Ground Controls and Pressure Tanks
At the surface, the piping connects to the home’s water distribution infrastructure:

Pressure Tank Installation: Water is pumped directly into a pre-pressurized diaphragm tank inside the home. The tank stores water under pressure so the pump does not need to start every time a faucet is opened.

Step 5: System Disinfection and Testing
After physical installation, technicians flush and test the entire system:

Sanitization (Shocking the Well): Unscented household bleach or specialized chlorine tablets are introduced into the well casing to eliminate bacteria introduced during the installation process.
